Posted on 20 March 2025 07:28 pm

NASA astronaut Sunita Williams has safely returned to Earth after an unexpected nine-month mission aboard the International Space Station (ISS). Initially planned as an eight-day mission, Williams and fellow astronaut Butch Wilmore's stay was extended due to technical issues with their Boeing Starliner spacecraft. They returned aboard SpaceX's Dragon Freedom capsule, which splashed down off the coast of Florida on March 19, 2025.

Upon landing, Williams and Wilmore began a 45-day rehabilitation program to readjust to Earth's gravity. This program is tailored to address the physical challenges faced after prolonged periods in microgravity, including muscle atrophy and balance disorders.

The extended mission has drawn significant attention and praise. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended a warm welcome, stating, "Welcome back, #Crew9! The Earth missed you." He lauded their unwavering determination and courage in the face of the vast unknown.

In India, residents of Williams' ancestral village celebrated her safe return with traditional prayers and festivities, reflecting the pride and joy felt across the nation.

The mission's extension has also sparked discussions about astronaut compensation. Reports indicate that astronauts like Williams and Wilmore receive their regular salaries without additional overtime pay, even for prolonged missions. They are, however, provided with allowances for incidentals during their time in space.

Overall, Sunita Williams' resilience and dedication continue to inspire many, highlighting the challenges and triumphs of human space exploration.
